Creating a Home Business – “what on earth am I doing?”

Updated: Aug 14

We’ve seen a huge presence online over the last several years of people building all kinds of online businesses. We witnessed the congestion of MLMs and promotions, the rise of affiliate marketing and many new avenues to take with the start of new platforms and fresh audiences.

But how do you know what is the right thing for you if you’re looking to make money from home?

Here are some super basic questions you can ask yourself right now to help filter out some of the options (because let’s face it, it’s overwhelming):

  1. Are you looking to sell products or a service? Products can be digital or a physical product. A lot can be involved with selling physical product as it means you need to create it, store it, package it, move it, etc. These days we are seeing more and more people shift to selling digital products. Again, you need to create it and then move it: market it to the right people and find the right place to promote what you’re selling.

  2. Let’s say you want to offer services… do you know what you want to do or who you want to target as an ideal client/customer? You don’t actually need to narrow this down as much as you may think!

  3. Are you wanting to be an affiliate for a brand or company? This can be selling courses, marketing products and earning commissions, etc. This means you control how much you promote it – but that’s essentially all that you can control. You don’t own what you are selling.

  4. Speaking of control, how much control do you want over your business? Do you want it to be, simply put, your very own business? If so, you need to utilize skills you have (or skills you plan to learn) and connect with people who need help in those areas. You then control how you market yourself and you can begin networking.

If you’re offering your own service, getting your own clients, you then control every aspect of your business. That’s right, your business.

You wouldn’t be an employee, or a consultant, or an affiliate. You would be the contractor making decisions that suit you.

So let’s talk about what this looks like:

  • You set the pricing

  • You decide when you want to work

  • You decide who you want to work with

  • You put together your own offers

You can start with no costs in the beginning, and handle business expenses as you grow and make money.

It doesn’t have to be complicated. It doesn’t have to be scary either.
